celebrating the milestones

Yesterday we celebrated God's provision at alpha, although I cant say to much about what actually happened, let's just say we received a heck of a lot of money from a foundation from which we only asked a little. Obviously this is of great excitement and an example of God pouring out his favour, lavish and generous blessing on us. Money is not everything, but it is a great tool, that when used effectively, and stewarded properly, it can bring about much good. 

I was reminded yesterday that everything is the Lord's (1 Cor 10:26) and he can choose to do with it what he wills. 

I also realized that when these moments happen, its so important to celebrate.

First and foremost God and his generous love expressed in a tangible way. 

Secondly to celebrate the moment and for those who gave.

Thirdly celebrate the direction of alpha and the opportunities that will flow out of this gift for the extension of God's kingdom here in Canada.

I am so grateful to be apart of something that is so much bigger than myself, so much bigger than alpha. It is a great privilege to do what I do and serve the local church. Although it is a great priviledge I do feel the burden of responsibility that comes with gifting and call. But I believe that God has enabled us to do what he asks us in the power of his Holy Spirit. 



But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. Luke 12:48

Creating Change... One Coffeshop at a time

This past week I met up with a Young Adults Pastor from Vancouver Island. His name is Rick, and I wish there were a hundred more Rick's out there. Listening to Rick tell his story about how he was getting involved in his community really blew me away. Doing something as simple as meeting with young guys and girls in coffee shops has produced much change in personal lives and is impacting the community where he lives.

There was nothing that was obviously special about Rick. But I recognized something that set him apart. Rick's heart for people to know the Gospel was so evident—to Know the transforming LOVE and GRACE of Jesus.

Over the years I've met many people who share this same passion. But Rick's passion was different. His passion seemed to have a really humble edge to it. Telling me his story and what he was a part of almost brought tears to his eyes. It came across that Rick was doing what he was doing because that's what God had asked him to do. It was something deeply personal. Being on Gods' team, serving in that community was a real PRIVILEGE for him. It was like he was a kid being asked to step up and play for his favourite sports team. As if God had personally asked him to PUT ON THE JERSEY. It was this attitude that impacted me profoundly. He was simply being what he was called to be.

Rick came over to the Island from a small town in Alberta. His Dad is the pastor of a really great church in Alberta, so he kinda "gets" the whole pastor thing. He was a youth pastor for awhile, leading a successful youth ministry. Taking some time out as a result of burnout, Rick decided to go into landscaping, which he really enjoyed.

During his time at his landscaping company, Rick felt that God began calling him back to pastoring. He received a job opportunity to become a Young Adults Pastor in Victoria on Vancouver Island.  After praying through the opportunity with his wife, they decided that they would accept the offer and move to Victoria. It was a step of faith. They had no idea what God had in store for them.

As he got involved with the community, Rick began just hanging out with the young people from his church. He did this by meeting up with them frequently in coffee shops. Each week he would meet with a number of them to chat with them, journey together with them and work on things like how to read the bible and praying, etc. Often he would study a book of the bible with the guys and girls and teach them how to journal and how to listen to God speaking to them through His word.

It was not long before these groups started to grow… one became two, and then five, etc. Soon other people who frequented the coffee shops noticed these groups meeting at the same time every week, and started to ask why. One such person was a girl named Carolyn, who worked in the coffee shop. She asked them one day what they were talking about. After Rick explained that they were learning how to read the bible and learning to follow Jesus, she said she had wondered about that stuff and thought it was cool that they were talking about it.  The next week Carolyn asked if she could join in the conversation.


This is just one of the many stories that Rick told me.
 
My reason for meeting with Rick was to discuss the possibility of taking each of these groups through Alpha in the very same coffee shops, because he has felt they needed help and wanted a resource that could help young people explore the meaning of life together in a way that would encourage conversation about Jesus in an inclusive and relaxed environment. He is excited about the idea.

One side note… The manager of one of the Starbucks where Rick meets attends his church. She was at a recent managerial meeting where the person in charge mentioned he had heard of these groups meeting in various coffee shops. He asked whether they were causing problems and maybe should be asked to leave. “Oh no,” said one of the other managers who was not a believer “They are actually great customers, duper friendly and good for business. We actually like having them there.”

"But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing."  2 Cor 2:14-15

Powell River

One of the really great things about my job working for Alpha is that I get to travel around BC and find out what is happening at the local church level around the province. Today i travel 4 hours north of Vancouver. Two ferry rides later and after some spectacular view - some of the most breathe taking views I have ever seen in my life we arrived at the Westview Baptist church, where they were hosting us for their missions fest. I came up with Jason Ballard and the Campus Fire Crew - Chris Hall and Timmy G as Jason was invited to lead one of the breakout seminars and and evening talk. I had a great day hanging out the these guys -  super fun loving and such a heart for God's Kingdom.

At lunch Jason and I meet with a bunch of people who have been involved in running Alpha in Powell River over the last decade. Not to my surprise I encountered the usual Alphaholics (people who just go on alpha over and over and over again and make alpha the be all and end all of their faith) who usually frequent some of the smaller towns. However, these people had a different vibe. They genuinely got the Alpha vision and from the world Go have been really passionate about sharing the Gospel of Jesus. One of the oldest and softest spoken ladies in the room name Margie, told us how when she first heard of Alpha, she brought the videos and hosted 20 people in her house. She just believe in God using it. Many years and many Alpha courses down the road, she is still actively involved in making God known through Alpha. I really am humble when people want to stick with the vision, and not jsut move on to the next best thing like so many people from my generation. i was reminding again that there is so much to learn from the elderly, who are so gracious and humble in heart, yet love the Lord with a deep passion and conviction. 

At the end of the day I am so thankful for this opportunities to understand and witness the outworking of God's church here on earth. What a privilege it is to do what I do.

God is Able

God is able




God is able! Knowing this truth in your heart can really radically change your life, and grant you perspective that you could never have imagined to have. Today I was reading in Bill Hybel's book - Too Busy Not to Pray. In it he spoke about our ability to trust that God answers our prayer id very much proportional to our faith in his omnipotence. If God is truly omnipotent then he is able to do what ever we ask him. This is not so say that God will answer our prayers in the way we might want, but to know in our heart of hearts that he does have the ability to do so. As we press into him and pray according to his will, there is no doubt that in his grace he will answer our requests. What do you need to have faith for today, know that GOD IS ABLE? What do you need to believe knowing that GOD IS ABLE.

Rivendell Retreat

It hard to describe what I have been feeling the past few months. The last year has been an adventure, packed with many moments of grandeur and life giving opportunities. Spanning these moment have been both challenges to learn from and victories to celebrate. This last week I took some much need time out to reflect, think and pray and give thanks to Jesus, who by his grace has brought me to where I am thus far. 

When I first arrived in Vancouver, many people at Regent spoke of the Rivendel Retreat Lodge on Bowen Island. I have always been keen to check it out, and I loved the thought of getting away to prayer and spend sometime away from the city out in creation. So finally last week after I cancelled my trip to London I headed to the Horseshoe bay to catch the midday Ferry.

After a short ferry ride across the bay I began my trek up the hill to the lodge on a beautiful spring day. I meandered up the grey snake like road, I wondered through the quaint little coast town. The sun was shining, the smell of a new season was in the air.
I could literally smell,
taste
and touch the change that hung in the air.

Change

Something that I desired so badly in my heart after months of grey winter skies and trying so hard to steward work and studying - all the doing had finally taken its toll on me. My mind, body and soul was in much need of rejuvenation and new vision.

As the sun beat down,  I cried out to the Lord to show me my path for the next season, to affirm where I was and the purposes that he had for me in Canada. Nearing the end of the climb, I passed through a construction sight and I had a wonderful word from the Lord. At first, I muttered negative thoughts about the mess of the construction sight and how ugly it looked. Even though I knew the end result would be a beautiful house looking of the majestic bay. I realized at that very point that my life in fact felt like a bit of a construction sight. It wasn't all that attractive. I know that from the outside people might sometimes think that I had it together, but the truth is, non of us really have it together and it is by God grace that we forge on, living out what our creator has called us to do. Anyway, back to the picture. So my life a construction sight- God the clearing away to make space for something beautiful to be built. Sometimes the clearing and the foundation making, the pouring of concrete and blandness of these stages is a little disillusioning. sometimes you cant see the plan for what the final building will look like although you get hints or glimpses of it as you go along. Praying through this image I receive renewed revelation and confidence about the journey that I am on. I life long journey. Although I may not know and see the final purposes of my time in Canada. I do feel that it is strategic; a laying of the foundation, the clearing for something beautiful to be built. My life in construction, not more, no less, but in a process of being made better. Not by me but by the master architect and builder. The one who sees and knows the end from the begging. What a joy to know that ultimately my life is in the hands of the one who created me. Praise God.

Limitless LOVE

Psalm 103:11–12
For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us

It amazes me that God actually loves us so much, even though we can fail him time and time again. Praise God that the riches of His mercy and love are from a well that is eternally deep.

We see in this Psalm , we see the Psalmist David wrestling with the idea of God's mercy towards those that fear God. He compares it to the great expanse of the heavens. Considering how much more we know about the heavens than what David would have known,it makes the magnanimity of this truth come ALIVE.

The very fact that that the Heaven are a limitless expanse; we are not even able to fully measure the extent of the universe even with our most modern technology, lies the hope that no matter what we have done, what transgressions we may have committed, we can come to God, because the extent of his mercy is so great. In fact it is so great than when we come to him, he removes our transgressions from us- as far as the east is from the west - that's limitless love.

Let the joy of this truth set your heart free today to know that you are loved not because of who your are but because of who God is, a God of limitless LOVE.

The New Testament lays a greater stress on prayer than it does on the evangelization of people. There is a deeper need to prayer that there is even for people to be converted, and I don’t say that lightly because there is a fierce need for conversion. But conversions wont happen unless we are praying and the Bible says that from the beginning to the endBishop Sandy Millar

We have a big vision for the re-evangelization of the nations and the transformation of society. And the GOOD NEWS is that God has promised to give us precisely these blessings; describing them in 2 Chronicles 7:14 as the healing of the land, hearing of prayers, and the forgiveness of sins. The BAD NEWS is that promise is conditional upon our humble and fervent prayers.

"When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:13-14

Three of the most important words in the passage may well be the most inconspicuous words too: WHEN… IF… THEN

WHEN…
Before God promises blessing, He Promises problems. His people are not immune from the droughts and plagues, which, to an agrarian culture, meant disaster at every level: environmentally, financially and socially.
IF…
We are currently experiencing environmental, financial and social crisis but sadly so many of God’s people are placing their hope in products, personalities and programs instead of doing the one things that God’s requires: that we turn to Him in prayer. There is a big IF that acts as a hinge, connecting the prediction of problems (when) with the most incredible promises of healing and salvation (then). We want God to say “If problems come, when you pray, then I will act,”  but actually He says the exact opposite: “When problems come, if you pray, then I will act…”
THEN…
When challenges come, if God’s people will respond with prayer that are humble, hungry and holy, He promises to answer us by sending forgiveness and healing. The hinge of history, it seems is the bended knee.

God is not deaf, He listens; more than that He acts. He does not act in the same way whether we prayer or not. Prayer exerts an influence upon God’s actions, even upon his existence.” Karl Barth
So as we re-think prayer in light of this scripture its again unpins that it is something essential that we are to engage in .

why is it so difficult to prayer

Recently, I was with a bunch of people discussing different spiritual disciplines, which help foster spiritual growth. Most, if not all of the people, spoke of how they find prayer to be one of the most difficult things to do. This may not seem surprising to you, but it was surprising to me as the group of people I was having this discussion with where all seminary students - people who had devoted a large portion of their time to the study of Scripture and all things theological.

After all, surely if you are in seminary school you would be praying a lot, right? Well… this doesn’t appear to be the case.  This led me to ask the question, what are the reasons that so many of us struggle with prayer? Wanting to understand how other people thought about this, I emailed a number of my close Christian friends and asked them this question. Again, I was somewhat surprised by the answers they gave me. Here is what a few of them said:


Why is it so difficult to pray?


Pray, pray, pray.Let’s be honest for a second. How many of you struggle with prayer? I’m not talking about the odd request that we rattle off to God when we wake up or before we go to bed.

I mean more than a few minutes a day that are set apart for intercession.  I mean prayer that changes our hearts towards what we are praying for, or prayers that are filled with power to change the world.

My instinctive response would be…”not often enough!” I would guess that most of your responses would be the same. Most people, in particularly leaders, just seem to be TOO BUSY to pray. But maybe it’s more of an excuse and there are deeper reasons that we find it difficult to pray.
“I guess the obvious answer is busyness that seems more pressing which often leaves me physically too exhausted to be in good shape for a flourishing prayer life. The problem with this reason is that busyness only appears to be the problem but it isn’t. I can make time for other things that are important, like school work, hanging out with mates, watching sport etc. so i guess one of the roots of the problem is that prayer often just isn’t that important to me. Very sad but my actions validate this point.”
Time.
Ability to focus (distraction - I have a million things going on in my head all the time)”
Grappling with prayer in terms of its power/does it change situations/or is it my wishful thinking/or is it to deepen my relationship and dependence on God? “
Fatigue.
“The main reason I don't get around to praying is because of the emotional and spiritual effort of focusing my mind in prayer. It always seems to hang over me as a burden and I can never stay focused for very long, so there is an implicit sense of failure that I feel regarding my prayer life, as if I am not "putting in enough hours."
I always feel too busy to pray, since I never really feel like doing it, I always choose some other responsibility to give my time to.”
Procrastination and people.”

I’m not sure which of these responses you identify with most, but I know that most - if not all - resonant with me in one way or another. These responses ultimately evoke more questions. What are the underlying reasons that elicit these responses? Why do so many of us have the same frustrations and attitude and how can we think differently about prayer? Are some of us just good at praying and other not, or is this a discipline that needs to be practiced?
This leads us to question - what is man’s responsibility and what is God’s responsibility? This then leads us to enquire more about the sovereignty of God and our part in participating in His ultimate will. All in all, the matter of prayer becomes quite complex.

So let’s recap… the main things that seem to be hindering prayer are:
BUSYNESS
LACK OF TIME / PROCRASTINATION
LACK OF DESIRE TO PRAYER
LACK OF FOCUS
FATIGUE
QUESTIONING THE IMPLICATIONS OF PRAYER (does prayer really change anything?)
It is clear through Scripture, literature and observance of the great disciples of faith, that prayer is critical and if not practiced we become ineffective in our abilities and in our daily lives. This doesn’t mean to say that God won’t use us, but maybe not to the full extent of how He could.
Next we will look discussing and overcoming these challenges and how we can develop a fresh vision for prayer!

a praying people





Pray to God. Anywhere. No matter what time. About anything or any person. He wants to hear from you.  













Many gold nuggets of truth were spoken at the Alpha International Week at Holy Trinity Brompton, 2011. Check out this video for highlights of the week. One of the key take home points that stood out for me and many others was the tremendous emphasis on prayer. If there was one thing to which I would attribute the success of Alpha, it would be prayer.
As we study the bible and look at church history or talk to believers today about where the church is most vibrant, we read and hear the same thing: the key to more power is more prayer.
I came away from the conference with a heart for intercession and a heart to pray more myself and with others.
Over and over I asked myself the question, “What does it mean to be a praying people?” And evening more importantly, “What does it mean and look like to be a praying leader?”
Robert Speers says, “The evangelization of the world depends first upon the revival of prayer”. So the question is… what are we doing to develop a revival of prayer? 
 I firmly believe this is an area in which we can all grow, and therefore I want to take us on a journey over the next few weeks on the theme of prayer. Over these weeks I will explore the development of a fresh vision for prayer and how it can tangibly influence the advance of the Kingdom here on earth. After all, prayer is the ONE thing that underpins everything we do.
I will also look at some of the hindrances we might have as modern day busy people and describe some of the practical individual and corporate models of prayer that might be useful for you to employ in your individual life or use as you lead other students in your various ministries.

the ART of REST...



Over the past while, I have become increasingly aware of how busy our lives have become. There are many things that demand and compete for our attention. As leaders most of us can identify with having diaries and calendars full week after week. When I ask people, “how are you doing?” they usually respond, “BUSY”. I certainly know that this is often my go-to response. Telling people that I am busy gives me a sense of purpose, it makes me feel that I am actually doing something with my life.

But could I make better use of my time?
Rethinking what I do with my time has made a big difference in my life.

Asking a few simple questions may help us think about being more intentional with our time.

-When it comes to how we use our time, what does normal look like for most people?
-What do we need to do to be in control of our time?
-What makes you STOP?
-How can the concept of Sabbath benefit your time management?
-How can I better my life by intentionally choosing what fills my day?

Many of us take work home and allow it to fill every spare second. If it’s not the house phone or cell phone or TV, it’s email, Facebook or Twitter. There are many things competing for our attention, and if we are not careful ,they will distract us from finding true rest.

In order to explore the concept of true rest, consider the Biblical concept of Sabbath. Sabbath may seem weird by today’s standard. But there is something beautiful and deep within this Jewish custom. Sabbath is a day that is set apart for God for our benefit.

Sabbath is a gift.

We find these words written in Scripture.


"'Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am the Lord. Lev 19:30

"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Exo 20:8

“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God” Heb 4:9

Then he (Jesus) said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” Mark 2:27

In these verses we see that Sabbath begins as a command. Breaking the Sabbath is breaking the command. This law was given to Israel for their benefit.

We find in the Jewish story that keeping the law brings life and God’s blessing, and not keeping it brought a curse and resulted in being cut off from God.

In the New Testament, we see Jesus coming to fulfill the law, to uphold it and supersede it. We see clearly in the book of the Hebrews that Sabbath is really about finding rest and peace in God.

It’s for our benefit.

In the Gospel’s Jesus’ words are powerful and teach us that it really is... for OUR benefit.

So if we know this, why is it then that we struggle with the concept of Sabbath?

Why are we unable to stop DOING,
and just BE?

Time and time again I have turned to the words of Jesus in the verses below. The Message translation really brings Jesus’ words to life.

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me-watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." Matt 11:28-30 (Emphasis added)

Setting a Sabbath day is about finding structure and understanding that the structure of grace is about flow and rhythm.

How are we discovering and learning the unforced rhythms of grace?

Are we taking a day a week to,

disconnect,
from the things that distract us
and
reconnect
with our creator and sustainer?
The One who is the life giver, the peace giver, the One in which we find true rest?

In the word of Jesus, we find that he is primarily talking about relationship, our relationship with him.

Sabbath is relationship.

Building our relationship with God is finding rest in him. It is about

RE:PENTING
RE:CEIVING
RE:NEWING

Think of a beautiful piece of art you know... Do you think that artist decided one day to pick up a paint brush and suddenly paint a masterpiece? Or do you think that he or she tried many times to develop beautiful art?
The artist would need to practice in order for it to be good, right?

In the same way, Sabbath keeping is something that needs to be practiced. It takes a conscious decision to turn off or shut down the things in life that fill your time and space on your Sabbath? This is hard when you first try it, but it will get easier along the way as you learn the art of REST.

The paradox of South African Youth

This is a great article which leaves me feeling hopefully about my country South Africa. If only this type of mindset could reform the nation.

In post-apartheid South Africa, we all have the freedom to participate in the political process - but also the right not to participate. Our country's youth have tended to exercise the latter right, but the fact is that we need to participate politically if we want to inherit a country we can be proud of. KHAYA DLANGA's speech at The Gathering.As young people in South Africa, to a large degree, we cannot really claim to have fought for liberation, although we are the ones who stand to benefit the most. Others fought on our behalf because we didn’t really understand what was going on. Our parents, their parents and their parents before fought for freedom. They died so that we might lead lives of our own choosing and making. They did not count on us being lost.

But, we don’t know who we are nor where we are going. We are lost, like a plastic bag blowing in the wind. That generally happens when you follow overachievers. Our parents were overachievers for they defeated a system far bigger than themselves.
We want to thank them for what they did. For bleeding and dying. For bleeding and living. For bleeding and not giving up. We think we will thank them by acquiring material possessions to impress them, but more importantly, to impress our friends. They bleed again because it is as if we are saying to them, “Look at what freedom can buy. A BMW.” They shake their heads. We shake ours, because deep down we know how empty our exploits are. And so we make a noise. We shout. Our shouts have no substance. No wisdom. Unlike an orgasm, wisdom cannot be faked.
We become agitators for its sake - not because we are bringing new ideas, but we agitate because we seek relevance. But we don’t realise that our relevance has no relevance.

What to do with all this freedom? Freedom has many so many complex sides to it. The right to buy; the right not to buy. The right to spend; the right not to spend. The right to care for the poor; the right to live one’s life without giving a damn about the poor. The right to care only for oneself. These are the consequences and the pleasures of freedom that we enjoy today.

A week ago, I watched the HBO mini-series on America’s second president, John Adams. While he was stationed in France to seek assistance from the French to resist the British, a French noblewoman asks him if he has ever attended the opera.

Adams responds by saying he has no ear for music because, “My occupation allows me little time for the finer arts. No, I must study politics and war, you see, so that my sons will have the liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons must study navigation, commerce and agriculture, so that their children will have the right to study, poetry, painting and music.” His son, John Quincy Adams, would become the sixth president of the United States. He too had dedicated himself to service.
Judging from what John Adams said to the Frenchwoman, we are missing an important step. Our parents fought for freedom, and we must fight to build the country, to strengthen its democracy, to build a foundation upon which the nation will prosper, not just look out for our own individual prosperity, for we prosper more as individuals if we help the whole nation prosper

Since the last generation fought for our freedom, what are we fighting for? What is the mission of this generation besides partying? (Something to which I am completely unopposed I might add). Is it the sole thing we have decided to dedicate ourselves to? What have we decided we will do? What is our North Star?

We need to have a unified goal, but we all go towards it in various directions: some pursue it in commerce, others in government, others in the arts. Where are we going? Since the grown-ups have not told us where they are taking the country, we might as well set our own course. What is the single, simple, palatable proposition?

What is the bold, balls-to-the-wall motto that we shall adopt? The great thing about the “American Dream” is that it can be whatever you want it to be. The motto gives you endless possibilities. But I want to refer to something that Apple CEO and founder Steve Jobs said during the early days of his company: "I want to make a ding in the universe." It is vague, but it is a bold statement. And you know what? He has.

I am not here to preach. I am here to speak to myself as a youth.

We grow up too slowly, but when eventually we do, we grow old too fast. We will wake up one day to suddenly realise that it is all up to us. We didn’t pay attention, now we must look after the country.
We are young, we should rightfully enjoy our youth. There is a misconception that enjoying one’s youth involves sex, partying and drinking. If I don’t do these things then I am not really enjoying my youth is the logic. Again, I am not opposed to parties, I go to several a week. All I am saying is we must not just live from one party to the next. Those who have lived the kind of lives that just involve hedonism often call these years, “My wasted youth”. If we want to make an impact, we can’t just focus on the shallow and narrow factors that just speak to the individual. There are many young people who contributed tremendously while they were still young.

The third president of the US, Thomas Jefferson, was just 33 when he wrote one of that nation’s most important documents, the Declaration of Independence. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Even if he had never become president, just having written that document would have put him and it in American folklore.

At 26 years old, Martin Luther King Jnr organised a non-violent bus boycott after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in a segregated bus. At the end of the 381 days, the economy of the town had broken down so badly that the locals called for negotiations, and the Supreme Court declared that segregated buses were unconstitutional. Overnight, King became the national leader of the civil rights movement, a very youthful 27 year old. At 28, Martin Luther King preached his famous sermon, “Loving your enemies”.

His idea was radical because it was new. It was non-violent. It was also about love at the same time. It called to build, not to destroy. Yet he was a youth

And of course, Steve Biko who died at 31, left us with radical ideas that we still quote to this day. “I write what I like.”

How did these young people become so famous? They served humanity not themselves. Studies show that people who serve causes that are higher than themselves are more satisfied and are happier. Those are, in fact, the ones who are enjoying their youth.

I am not here to preach. I am merely talking to myself. Publicly. I don’t have answers. I have the same questions that my generation is grappling with.

There is a terrible misconception that when you are young and somehow want to be involved in the political process, you have to be angry, abandon all reason and display all the vices of youth to make an impact in the political landscape. These young men, Jefferson, King and Biko, all stood up and were counted. They showed that one is never too young to be wise.

The second part of this talk I will call The Power of Opportunity. Opportunity in itself is agnostic. It favours no one. It favours those who do something with it, whether it is for ill or good. What does the power of opportunity mean? It means that you are fearless when you are faced with it, for it presents itself always, under good circumstances, under bad. It’s just up to the individual to see it. It also means that when you see opportunity you don’t disqualify yourself because you are not ready. Always prepare yourself for opportunity. One of the things I often say to myself is, “I am not qualified to do anything, but I will not disqualify myself from doing anything.” By the way, I’ve always wanted to be quotable. You can quote me on that
The problem with us is that we run away from our responsibility. We will inherit this country. Giving it up for others to run won’t serve us, or the country. We cannot run away. Fat is the only problem from which one should run away. There is no point in avoiding what you will eventually face in the future. The longer you run away from your problem, the bigger the problem gets and by the time it gets to you, it may be too big for you to handle
Our generation has incredible talent. There are many powerful minds. We have more than enough capable individuals. But there is an underlying sense of entitlement with many who believe that opportunities should fall into their laps. They shouldn’t. The people we most admire are those who create opportunities where there are none. What will our generation be known for? Entitlement must come to an end because it puts no responsibility on you as an adult. If you can’t do a job and you know very well that you can’t learn once you’re in it, don’t accept it. Just in case you think I am speaking out against affirmative action, I’m not. One still needs to be qualified to be an AA candidate. I am supporter and a fan of AA.
I am not here to preach. I am here talking to myself as a young person.

The attraction of the bling lifestyle has translated itself, not just into a state of apathy, but into a sense of not biting the hand that feeds me. That hand may harm the country in the future, but I’m being fed right now so I will not speak out. A message for us young people: Stand up for what you believe in, not what will make you popular. If what you believe makes you popular, bonus.

But I will leave young people with this message: Just because you don't know what you want to do with your life, doesn't mean you're not going to do anything with it

Borrowed Light

Passion 2010



On Friday night, I got the opportunity to attend Passion 2010, the last stop on the Passion World Tour. This was officially my second time at a Passion conference. Passion is a movement that I really believe in you can check out their website here http://www.268generation.com. In my opinion it really captures the heart of the gospel. Grace and new life through the transforming power of Jesus in a simple, non weird or pushy kinda of way.

Since it was my second time, I decided that I would serve as a volunteer. It ended up being great fun and I got to meet a lot of people and make some new friends. I worked at the registration desk from about 4 right through to 7:30 as people poured in from all around the city and the surrounding areas. There were even people as far from Tennessee there to attend and help out. After a finally tally, there ended up being over 11 000 people in the Rogers Area, gathered to worship and hear from the Lord. A great evening, where many lives were no doubt changed and a passion for making Jesus name famous in the city.
